Every summer around 40,000 students in Sheffield move house - we're on a mission to reduce the waste produced, and you can help!

The Donate, Don't Waste scheme provides a sustainable way to dispose of your unwanted items.

And with drop-off locations across Sheffield, it's super accessible.

How it works

  1. Identify any items that can be reused

  2. Put reusable items into a heavy duty bin bag

  3. Take your bag to one of the designated donation points between Monday 27 May and Friday 19 July

  4. Your donations will be collected and either sold in British Heart Foundation charity shops or recycled

Donation points

City Campus: The HUBS (Hallam Students' Union), inside the building

Collegiate Campus: Robert Winston, to the right of the building

What to donate

Items that are suitable for donation:

  • Clothes and shoes
  • Accessories
  • Books
  • Board games
  • Electricals (ie TVs, games consoles)
  • Furniture
  • Bric-a-brac

What not to donate

Items that are not suitable for donation:

  • Toiletries
  • Perishable goods such as food and drink
  • Used pillows, duvets, or quilts
  • Cushions and cushion covers (unless with fire labels)
  • Knives
  • Personal appliances (ie electric shavers) unless new and in sealed box
  • Prescription glasses

Why donate?

By sorting your belongings and donating anything you no longer want or need, you'll...

  1. Reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, promoting environmental sustainability (see our sustainability policies).

  2. Reduce waste left on the streets, ensuring your community is left clean and tidy for neighbours and visitors.

  3. Help fund British Heart Foundation's life saving research into heart and circulatory diseases.

  4. Have a more organised and less stressful moving day, with fewer items to transport between old and new accommodation.

Moving out checklist

There are a few simple steps you can take to reduce your environmental impact when moving out of student accommodation.

The Donate, Don't Waste scheme is run in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University, Hallam Students' Union, the University of Sheffield, Sheffield Students' Union, Sheffield City Council, and the British Heart Foundation.
